The Pigeon Lake Child and Family Society was incorporated in February, 2001 by a group of individuals who believe that strong families build strong communities.
Many of our projects revolve around the youth in our community. We feel that cultural learning is important for children. For the past several years we have sponsored the Alberta Opera Society who come and do productions, at the Falun and Lakedell Elementary Schools, with invitations extended to Pipeston and Mimew Sakahikan students. In the 2019/20 year this will also be extended to the Elementary School at Winfield. In 2018 Theatre Concrete from Edmonton was invited to do a production for the Junior High and High School Students on cyber bullying.
Another program we have established in our region is the Florence Riske Caregiver award. Established in 2007 in honour of Florence who looked after her disabled son, Melvin, until the age of 92. We choose a person who has given of themselves usually for many years to care for another. These individuals do so without asking in return and we feel they need to be recognised. So we put on an afternoon event for them and 50 invited guests. At this event there is recognition received from the Federal, Provincial and Local Governments. To date there have been 12 recipients of this award!
We introduced a new cultural program for children in our four elementary schools. They attend the Winspear concert hall in Edmonton to enjoy a production put on by the Edmonton Symphony. Grades one to three children enjoy one production and another hosts the Grade four to six students. Teachers are given support material prior to these productions to prepare the students for their experience.
Our biggest campaign is Santa's Elves and preparations for this are ongoing throughout the year. We make sure that families who may be struggling just to make ends meet on a monthly basis are able to enjoy a nice Christmas by providing them with an extensive food hamper and gifts for the children. In 2018 gifts were wrapped for 221 children and 89 hampers were delivered. Many thanks to the volunteers who assist in the organizing, wrapping and delivering of these gifts.
